How To Do a Pre MOT Check
It's that time of year again. The time when your car's MOT is due and you start to get anxious about whether or not it will pass. Will you need to get your car repaired? Will it be expensive? How long will it take? The good news is that there are a few things you can do to reduce the stress and increase the chance of your car passing its MOT. In this blog post, we'll run through a quick and easy pre-MOT checklist that you can do in your own driveway. Let's get started!
1. Check all of your lights, including your headlights, sidelights, indicators and brake lights. Make sure all of your bulbs are working and that your headlights are properly aligned. If you're not sure how to do this, there are plenty of helpful YouTube videos out there.
2. Check your tyres. Make sure they have the proper tread depth (at least 1.6mm around the whole tyre) and air pressure. You can find the required specifications in your car user manual, which can usually be obtained online too if the physical copy goes missing.
3. Give your car a good clean! This one isn't strictly necessary, but it will help the mechanic see any potential problems more easily. Plus, it can't hurt to have a clean car.
4. Check all of your fluid levels (engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc.). Top them up if necessary.
5. Check over your windscreen as any cracking larger than 40mm will result in a fail, and its even worse news on the driver-side as any damage larger than 10mm will also result in a failure. Do also check your mirrors for any damage that might inhibit your view.
6. Check for any warning lights on your dashboard. If any of them are lit up, make a note of it so you can tell the mechanic when you take your car in for its MOT.
7. Take a look under the bonnet. Check for any obvious signs of damage or leaks.
8. Take it for a spin! This step is optional, but if you have time, it's always a good idea to take your car out for a quick ride before taking it in for its MOT test. This will help you identify any potential problems so you can address them before the check.
That's it! You're now ready for your car's MOT check. By following this simple pre-MOT checklist, you can reduce stress and increase the chances of your car passing its MOT with flying colours!
